Programmes and projects
Below projects are currently funded by the British Embassy's Bilateral Programme budget:
- Restoration of Charda Masoom Shrine, Kabul Old City -The aim is to support recovery and promote an appropriate form of development, though safeguarding the historic fabric and improving the living conditions and livelihoods of residents. This project has started in late Sep 07 and will be completed by June 2008. A contribution of £25,000 to Aga Khan trust for Culture provides for implementation of this project.
- Media skills training sessions for NGOs and journalists - The purpose of this four days of training sessions to develop skills of Afghan NGOs to communicate with local/internat journalists and the communities they are helping. Hope this training will strengthen the Afghan NGOs in media skills so that they can communicate the work they're doing to help the country's reconstruction to a wider audience, and to train local journalists in newsgathering and the responsibility and power of a free press. This pilot project training conduct in Kabul and another city, Herat.A grant of $5,200 provide for Chance to Shine to do this project in March 2008.

Informal Education for women in rural areas. Daikundi Province - Dikundi is one of the poor area and very high interest in education (central highlands). The purpose of this project is to provide opportunities for those girls and women who have not been able to attend school due social, economical and other reasons. Pave the way for the next generation to be encouraged to learn. This project is for six months started in late Sep 07 and will be completed jointly with United National World Food Programme as food for education policy and implementing by a local NGO(Asia Women Development Service for Afghanistan) A total of 1,485 number of women and girls will benefit from this training with £26,500 funding.
- Health Education through community Women council -This project aims to ensure the women community councils deliver basic priority: education messages and encourage women to assess for service delivery regarding ante natal care, other health and human rights issues in provinces of Parwan, Kapisa and Panjshir. Activity started in Sep 2007 and will be completing in end March 2008. Women Health & Development Organisation implementing this project with £37,500 funds.
- Celebrating 21 Sep 07 Peace Day, follow by events and a week of peace building workshop through the Afghan Civil Society Forum. - Afghan Civil Society organisation Network for peace which include 29 organisations promote peace building in Afghanistan by media campaign with a broad outreach and collection of articles published and distributed nation wide. Peace Prize winners were selected nation wide and events took place in all provinces of Afghanistan including conveying of peace messages, a cultural program with the topic peace. British Embassy contributed £8,500.
- Promoting religious tolerance and pluralism under the banner of the 800 anniversary of Mawlana Balkhi Rumi. -The project goal is to introduce the tolerant face of Islam as opposed to the fundamentalist interpreted version. Initiate a discourse on Mawlana's advanced interpretation of Islam and his ideas on Islam, peace, diversity and love of humans through small researches and conferences; Raising awareness among the youth and public about tolerant face of Islam thought seminars, publication and arts work competition. Establishing and improving the link between moderate intellectuals and civil society organisations in Afghanistan. Cooperation Centre for Afghanistan ( CCA) under take this activity and £9,500 was British Embassy contribution towards this initiative.

We Can End all violence against women campaign in Jalalabad, Kabul, Parwan, Panjshir, Mazar-e-Sharif, Kandahar and Heart. - Implementing agency is Afghanistan Rehabilitation & Reconstruction and Falah (ARRAF) -To reduce the social acceptance of violence against women in six provinces of Afghanistan. This campaign generally aim to reduce the social acceptance of violence against women in south Asia countries; Afghanistan, Bangladish, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India. This campaign has started in 2004 will continue up to 2011 but British Embassy provides £29,800 for activity up to end of March 2008.
- Working with men to strengthen women's rights in Afghanistan - Mazar Pilot Project , Implemented by Womankind. -Aim to work with 900 men to enable a greater degree of understanding of the needs and problems facing women in Afghanistan. Mobilise men to participate in the reconstruction of their commentates. Mosques and community spaces. Involve community leaders to work out a way for men to attend with out the stigma attached of talking about "women". This activity will go on until June 2008 with £12,800 budget that provide from the British Embassy's Bilateral Programme Budget.

Reproductive Rights (Health Education)
Following the Parwan, Panjshir and Kapisa project that was successful we have expanded it to Kabul. This project also builds on the lesson learned to include men for Health Education as well, as the men are often the family decision-makers. Three hundred council members and health workers will receive one week’s training each. The project’s purpose is to deliver education messages and encourage women to access antenatal care and learn about other health and human rights issues. This project started in June 2008 and will be completed at the end of March 2009. Women Health & Development Organisation implementing this project with $55,000 funds.
This project was in support of the Embassy’s strategy to include some work on human rights. -
Living Traditions: Contemporary Art from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran.
The proposed exhibition brings together contemporary artists from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran in order to promote dialogue and exchange across borders among countries that share, and continue to be inspired by, the same cultural traditions. The exhibition will take place in Oct 2008 and Turquoise Mountain Foundation implement this initiative, to which $40,000 of funding was contributed by the British Embassy. This project is in support of the Embassy’s work for Regional co-operation. -
Human Rights trafficking Awareness project
Training for 400 Teachers and 60,000 students in 40 High Schools (20 Female & 20 Male) on Human Trafficking and its impact on the society. Conduction of four Arts Competitions among interested Trainees and Organising four Mass Events in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif cities.
This project started in Feb 08 to June 08 and $110,000 allocated to Afghan Rehabilitation and Reconstruction & Falah( ARRAF) to implement. This project was in support of the Embassy’s work on managed migration and deterring illegal immigration and trafficking. -
Rehabilitation of Baghlan-Sanati Comperhensive Health Centre.
Following the deadly suicide attack in this area in Nov 2007, the British Embassy decided to support the rehabilitation of this health centre in order to improve access to health care for residents of Baghlan – Fabrica. Aga Khan Foundation implement this project which has started in March 2008 and will be completed in Sep 2008. $82,000 funding provided to this project.
