British Chevening Scholarships: Applications for 2010-11
The British Government is pleased to invite applications for the British Chevening Scholarships programme for courses starting in September 2010. Chevening scholarships are the most prestigious awards available to international students for study in the United Kingdom. They enable future leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers from around the world to become familiar with the UK, to gain new skills, and update current professional skills. The ultimate objective is to benefit their countries upon their return.
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) shares in the funding of some scholarships in the scheme.
Eligibility
Scholarships are awarded to Afghan candidates of high intellectual and English language ability who will play a formative role in Afghanistan’s development. Applicants must normally:
- Be Afghan citizens
- Have a masters’ degree or a 4-year bachelors’ degree from a recognised university
- Have a minimum of 2 years’ work experience in their field
- Have excellent written and spoken English
- Show drive, achievement and exceptional ability
Duration
The scholarships are for one year of taught postgraduate study in the UK.
Value
The scholarship covers the full cost of study in the UK.
How to apply
Applications are welcome for all areas of study, but particularly development, public administration, governance, journalism/media and human rights.
Application for 2010-11 must be made online and only applications completed online will be accepted. Details on how to apply online can be found at www.chevening.com. We no longer accept applications on paper.

Selection
Selection will be by interview following initial short listing. Awards will be conditional upon reaching the required level in an IELTS English examination so you must have confidence in your English language ability.

Applications must be completed online by 16:30 on 28 November 2009. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted and we will not be able to give feedback on applications.
